JAPANESE SOCIAL HIERARCHY
Emperor- Supreme leader of Japan. Thought of as being a spiritual leader only to the people, the shoguns controlled most of the other aspects of the kingdom.
Shoguns- Military warlords of Japan. Were basically the de facto rulers of Japan because the Emperor did not exercise any power. Eventually, the Shoguns took over, and ruled until 1868, where the power went back to the Emperor.
Daimyo- Feudal rulers of Japan
Samurai- Warriors in the hereditary soldier class which had an employer
Ronin- Warriors in the hereditary soldier class with no employer
Peasant- Higher ranking lower class citizen
Artisians- Artisians worked with wood and metal and were the second highest ranking in the lower class.
Merchants- Merchants were considered the lowest of the lower class because they made their living off other people's work
Eta- The lowest of the lowest, the eta class dealt with the dead, making them unclean in the eyes of the rest of the Japanese society. This class wasn't even considered on the social ranking in Ancient Japan.
